The Importance of Details in Die Casting
ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL, Aug 5, 2021 -
At a busy foundry it can be easy to let small details become an oversight. From tasks like checking the alloy, temperature, and even ladle cup size- this can seem time consuming in the moment. However, those details are what will ultimately set you apart from the competition- giving the maximum quality and reliability your customers require. Having a grasp on the important details of die casting and partnering with a reliable equipment manufacturer that helps you to easily perfect them is what will not only keep you up and operating, but differentiated from the rest.
At the end of the day, there can be a hundred little items that can not only decide if the casting is good or bad, but if the process can even keep operating. Shibaura Machine is identifying several key details that help foundries meet their goals when it comes to productivity, quality, and scrap.
3 Die Casting Cell Details Not to Ignore
The operation of a simple die casting machine or a complex cell depends on all the little details being correct. This is by no means an extensive list, but several important details that can often be overlooked.
Ladle Cup
Overlooking the ladle cup size, set-up, and even cleanliness can quickly lead to issues that affect both productivity and quality. For example, a user may choose to not properly clean and coat the ladle cup because it will only drip a small amount each time. However, by the end of the day it will take more time to clean up the spilled mess than it would to replace the ladle cup.
Water Cooling Line
Ignoring your water cooling line leaking can cause major issues when it comes to protecting your investment. By the end of a shift, the excess water will find its way on a waste hauler for a dollar a gallon, when it could have easily been stopped by finding a clamp to stop the leak.
Sprayer Configuration
While it might seem time consuming and less than productive in the moment to figure out how to fix a sprayer that is not cooling a specific spot, the overall time and machine cycles the tool room polisher will have to stop the machine to clean off solder buildup can not be replaced.
Bottom line, ignoring the details in die casting can quickly escalate, create major issues, and cost you Benjamins.
Benjamin Franklin included a version of the following poem, preceded by the words, “A little neglect may breed great mischief,” in Poor Richard's Almanack in 1758.
“For want of a nail, the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe, the horse was lost.
For want of a horse, the rider was lost.
For want of a rider, the battle was lost.
For want of a battle, the kingdom was lost,
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.”
This poem reveals that we are only as strong as our weakest link. Think back to this poem and make sure your foundry is always looking for the “nail”.
